In July 2012, Wicklow Travellers Group and Comhairle Na nOg  joined forces to paint the Ball Alley in Crinion Park, Wicklow town.

The joint project was funded by Wicklow Town Council. The local Comhairle Na nOg undertakes two projects every year and decided to include the “Ball Alley” project as part of their work this year. They in turn approached Wicklow Travellers Group and invited their participation as well.

Three workshops were set up to take place in July in order to bring the young people together and develop some ideas as to what should be done with the Ball Alley. Ger Corkish, a local street artist facilitated these workshops. The idea was to let the young people come up with their own art for the walls. One last workshop, involving 35 young people, was held in C.E.A.R.T, Wicklow to put together all the drawings on a plan of the three walls.

Wicklow Travellers Group and Wicklow V.E.C supplied all the tools and scaffolding to the group. The first job was to cover up all the graffiti that was present, with two coats of undercoat. The Alley was then cleaned of all rubbish and weeds. The group then spent another two full day’s spray painting their pictures on to the walls.  During this time there were plenty of visitors and well wishers, who included the Town Clerk, the Traffic & Litter wardens, the local paper, the local Community Gardai and people who live in the immediate area. They all came to offer support and to hang out for a bit and to chat with the young people. The final day turned into a real family day, with parents and younger kids coming down to see it being finished.  All the young people that were involved thoroughly enjoyed putting their creative touches to the Ball Alley.
